This research investigates the determinants of cognitive ageing using a unique subset of twins who have undergone extensive cognitive testing over ten years. Factors involved are both genetic and environmental, using the wealth of data built up on the cohort.
We aim to shed light both on normal ageing of the brain and reveal changes related to pre-dementia states. Using structural, functional and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging we are studying identical twin pairs with different rates of cognitive change.
Do differences between the twins brains’ structure and function mirror their performance?
How is one twin more successful that the other: is it that they have fewer changes of ageing or do they use compensatory strategies?
