Twin Visit

Your visit to the Department

Twin research visits take place at St Thomas’ Hospital with spectacular views across the Thames towards the Houses of Parliament and take between 3.5 and 4.5 hours depending on the research. The visit consists of a number of measurements and tests with the help of our experienced clinical research team.

After the consent process whereby you confirm your permission to take part in the research and have your photo taken, we will ask you about your medical and health history, as well as other relevant information. We can also help ascertain zygosity through a series of short questions, for twins who are unsure whether they are identical or non-identical.

Currently you may be offered some or all of the following tests (depending on the research we are doing):

  • Bone density scan (DEXA) of hip, spine and whole body (DEXA results can reveal future risk of fractures)
  • Blood test (including a cholesterol and diabetes check, as well as DNA and other metabolites for use in research)
  • Height, weight and blood pressure
  • Online hearing test
  • Lung function test
  • Grip strength test
  • Fitness tests
  • Sensory tests
  • Cardiac assessment
  • Skin assessment
  • Eye test
  • Hair sample donation
  • 2D photos

As a thank you, you will be given a goody bag with an optional souvenir photo. When booking your research visit with our admin team, you will be offered reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses, hotel accommodation (where applicable) and a meal voucher.

Four to six weeks after your visit you will receive a set of results of some of the tests that you have had. For more information about the results, and for an explanation about why researchers cannot give out all results, please CLICK HERE.

We hope you will enjoy and benefit from the research visit. We look forward to seeing you!
